The 8-story Penn Commons (also known as the Phipps-McElveen Building) was built in 1896 by industrialist Henry Phipps as a real estate venture. In its early years it housed the McElveen Furniture Company, and is currently used mostly as off-campus student housing. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
