The P'yŏngyang University of Dramatic and Cinematic Arts was founded, along with several other universities, in the fall of 1953, at the end of the Korean (Fatherland Liberation) War. Unlike the P'yŏngyang University of Music and Dance (which draws its students from P'yŏngyang area schools), the University of Dramatic and Cinematic Arts selects students on a national basis. This is a civilian institution whose students will work in the DPRK's civilian arts companies; the military has a separate school for its dramatic and film companies. There are five faculties (Film Production, Drama Production, TV Broadcasting, Acting and Technology) and departments of direction, script writing, make-up and mass media studies. There is a track for graduate study in areas concerning TV broadcasting and film production. There is an emphasis on experiential education so there are production facilities located on campus and class trips to theaters and TV studios. Alumna will go on to work at the State Theater and the Korean Film Studios.
