Teck Resources Ltd. owns the Waneta hydroelectric power plant near Trail, but sold a 1/3 interest to BC Hydro in late 2009. Waneta has an installed capacity of 450 megawatts from four generating units and an annual average output of approximately 2,700 gigawatt hours of energy.

Teck's share of the electricity generated is used at it's Trail metallurgical operations, though any power surplus to the smelter can be sold on the open market. BC Hydro's share is used to meet BC's electrical needs.

The existing generating station does not utilize all the water flow coming over the dam. In winter 2010/11, construction started on the Waneta Expansion Project, a second powerhouse on the north side of the river that will have a capacity of 335 megawatts. Waneta Expansion is a partnership, with Fortis Inc. holding a 51% share in the project and the two Crown agencies Columbia Power Corporation (CPC) and Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) holding a 32.5% and 16.5% share, respectively. SNC Lavalin Inc. is designing and building the project, which will take 4 1/2 years to construct, while CPC is acting as project manager.
