Two tunnels through Chetoogeta Mountain built for Western & Atlantic Railroad. The first (southern or lower) tunnel was completed in 1850 and was highly contested during the American Civil War. The active (northern or upper) tunnel opened in 1928 and the old tunnel was closed.
