Watch your feet. Crevasses and an altitude of 19,800 feet make this place truly dangerous. It is however one of the truly "different" experiences to pass through here.

On 04/08/2007 my self (Dr dilip ganpatrao phal), Shri Shailesh Revankar, Shri Ashok Tole and Digamber Patil with Nepali HAPs got up early in the morning 4.00hrs with suffocation as snowfall was continuing our HAP has fully covered our tent with the outer left by earlier team, hence due to with thin air and suffocation we could not sleep throughout night. Till about 5.15hrs there were no signs of weather clearing and we could not wait any longer, we have to wear our warm cloths, gaiters, everybody wearied plastic cover over socks inside shoes, wrap up the sleeping bags, mats etc but all this took great deal of our energy, we had some light breakfast and started around 5.30hrs. We descended in the glacier between the kalindi peak and the deadly Avalanche peak and heading towards the pass earlier we thought of rope up but it was very difficult and as there were danger of hidden crevasses we decided taking the route from the base of the kalindi peak. The route is on the edge on the border of ice and rock with a steady climb but due to height it was very tiresome here we have seen sacks resting some clothes in the crevasses possibly bodies of the mountaineers smelling badly, with full white out, making the climb still difficult. Again after taking the traverse, we entered the glacier at final ascent as there were no crevasses, we were moving slowly but cautiously finally we reached the pass at 9.00hrs. It was really an emotional moment for us. We were standing at nearly 6000m (5947m, 19600ft to be exact). As all of us congratulated each other spent 10 to 15 min., offering Puja to the pass, distributed sweets among all of us. The weather was still bad it was continuously snowing and full white out even the Kalindi peak was not clearly visible. Forget about the scenery around, although we were upset about the visibility and white out, we clicked the photographs, Our Haps are the real heroes, with minimum of gear with no proper gloves, no proper shoes, and no proper clothes and carrying weight with happy faces, they make us to cross the pass safely. We roped up for the descent; we knew that the entire snowfield till our next campsite of Raj parav was heavily crevassed. Our guide and a Hap were our leader, they were checking the crevasses using their ice axe and generally everyone followed their foot step, we were very slow. After walking for hour on the right of the pass, we came to a point where their was a sharp gradient snow fall of 150ft to 200ft, our shoes were going deep inside, we decided to rappel down after anchoring on the rope one by one, HAP decided to take a rocky patch route nearby, after struggling for hour we were at the base of glacier. We roped up again as the ice field is full of crevasses, it was very difficult for our guide and the senior porter to find the way, snowing continuously and the weather still bad with full white out. On the way, we found camp material dumped and the sacks at least three in a vertical position as if some body has kept their and gone nearby, it must be a cases of accidents either due to bad weather or falling in the crevasses or due to hypothermia due to HAS. God knows how many bodies of the mountaineers kalindi glacier has swollen and still lying in the belly of the glacier it is only when the glacier will melt, the skeleton will come out. Guide was also confused and we were struggling for coming out of the vast snow field from 9.00 hrs to 16.00 hrs , due to white out, a stage has come and we thought that every thing is over i.e. the end of us and we couldn’t come out of this vast snowfield, but it seems our time has not come and Goddess Kalindi show us the way and at last after struggling for seven hours, and we reached around 17.30hrs the base of the glaciers, and our route is near the small stream (coming from the snout of the glacier) keeping that towards left. Weather slightly improved snowfall stopped with visibility improved, then boulder zone started we take some rest and headed towards Rajparav. We reached Rajparav (4900m/16300ft) around 18.30hrs. Our last member arrived at 19.30hrs we could trace him from our camp. we were so much exhausted. Once inside the tent I was just recollecting all the moments of the day really my belief for existence of the super power has doubled and confirmed it’s only that power has brought all of us safely without any serious incidence. Om Namo Shiva,Om Namo Shiva,Om Namo Shiva.

We cross kalindi Khal on 7th July 2009. It was very amassing experience, we never did to difficult trek before. But very sad to say that we lost our member Shri Dilip Samel, Development Officer-LIC, from Mumbai (age 42) on the way. He felt uneasiness after passing crossing pass and porter carry him upto rajparav but 7th night he died in tent. We all team member really miss him very much.
