Built in the 1950's to cope with the expanding need for public housing, the Kensington Towers Housing Project was completed with six 7-story buildings. Similarly affected with crime and poverty akin to other housing projects across the country, the Kensington Towers houses were doomed after NY State pulled their funding for the buildings in the early 1980's. After a last minute deal for private investment fell through, the buildings were ordered closed and placed into caretaker status.

Remaining abandoned for the next three decades, the buildings soon fell victim to extensive vandalism and were finally slated for demolition in 2007. After investigations revealed that each buildings heating system contained considerable amounts of asbestos, the demolition was halted as an abatement procedure was drawn up. At present, the buildings are still slated for demolition while asbestos remediation continues.

Once demolished, the land the towers presently occupy is slated for redevelopment as a senior care community.
