Chapora Fort, Goa

More Information : 22 km's. from Panaji. The fort is made of red laterite and was built by the Portuguese in 1617, on the site of an earlier Muslim structure (the name Chapora is the corruption of the word "Shahapura" or "Town of the Shah"). Since it was basically built as a border watch post, it was later deserted by the Portuguese in 1892, as the borders of its empire extended farther north (known as New Conquests). The massive ramparts and scattered Muslim tombstones are all that is left of this fort. One can still see the heads of the two tunnels, that formerly provided the supply routes for the besieged defenders
The Portuguese had won their rule in Goa but the threat from the Muslim and Maratha rulers went on. To protect themselves from this risk, the Portuguese built the Chapora fort in 1617. However, unlike the Aguada fort, this fort did not remain unconquered.
The Portuguese troops surrendered to the Maratha ruler, Sambhaj in 1684. But the locals were not too pleased with this and had a number of conflicts with the Marathas and finally in 1717, the Marathas withdrew their force. The Portuguese then took over again and rebuilt the fort. The new structure of the fort was equipped with underground tunnels that ensured a safe getaway in case of an emergency.
But this glory was not for long. As again in 1739 the Marathas captured the Chapora fort. However, two years later, in 1941, the Portuguese regained the fort when the northern taluka of Pednem was handed over to them.
However, the Portuguese completely abandoned the fort In 1892. And what remains today are only ruins. Though, there isn't much to see, the history lingers on.video

Visited this fort only for -- Dil Chahta Hai... The location of the fort is very well suited for good scenic beauty. Reaching there can be a pain point if you are not interested in a lil' bit of trekking. Parking is available but to reach the fort you would have to climb up on uneven / rocky surface. Also, there are no amenities available in and around the fort, so better be prepped with water / some snacks / beer :) Make sure to plan the trip when weather is favorable. Best time would be early morning or during sunset. More Info and Pics - http://owntherun.blogspot.in/2014/04/chapora-fort-goa-dil-chahta-hai-spot.html
