Point Conception / Humqaq

 cape (geography)  Add category

Prominent point of land on the California Coast where the direction of the coast changes from N-S to E-W. Consistently high winds make this point difficult to pass in a northbound direction.

In Chumash traditions, the point is known as Humqaq, "the Raven comes." It is considered the "western gate" of the continent, a place where souls depart for the realm of the dead, and the most sacred site in North America.
