Constructed in 1912 as the Metropole Hotel, the original ten story building was enlarged in 1924 with an addition of a wing and a eleventh story partial penthouse. In 1971, the hotel was converted into affordable housing for low income people. The 230 units included 220 efficiency units and 10 apartments.

In an effort to upgrade the city's "Backstage" entertainment district, the Cincinnati Center City Development Corporation (3CDC) acquired the property, located opposite the Aronoff Center, in 2009. The 3CDC transformed the building into a fetching contemporary art venue and 160 room boutique hotel with Louisville based 21c Museum Hotels.

The hotel is the first 21c Museum hotel outside of Louisville. The 21c Museum Hotel in Louisville was named the 6th best hotel in the world and number 1 in the U.S. by Conde Nast Traveller in 2009. The new hotel features a contemporary art museum, 8,000 sq. ft. of public exhibition spaces and a new restaurant.
