seaport, mining

The Pointe-Noire seaport terminal exports concentrated iron ore produced at Cliffs Natural Resources Wabush Mine and Consolidated Thompson's Bloom Lake Mine. The terminal currently has two berths, one each for the above companies. Beginning in late 2012, the terminal will also begin handling iron ore mined at Tata Steel/New Millenium Capital's new DSO project near Schefferville. A separate ore stockpile area and third berth are planned for this project.
Concentrate from Cliffs' Wabush Mine is rolled into balls and fed to traveling grate furnaces for firing, producing pellets. These pellets are conveyed to dock storage bins or directly to the shiploaders. (Consoldated Thompson's concentrate is not pelletized before shipping).
