Court Garden & Higginson Park (Marlow)

United Kingdom / England / Marlow

The house was built in the 1760s for Dr Battie, a distinguished physician specialising in mental cases, and his name is reputed to be the origin of the term 'batty' as used today. He designed the house himself and local tradition has it that he managed to forget the staircase, which had to be added later. The park surrounding the house is known as Higginson Park in memory of General Sir George Higginson, a veteran of the Crimean War, who lived in Marlow, and celebrated his 100th birthday here. As a result of the initiative of several prominent townspeople, Court Garden and the park were bought by public subscription and given to the General, who, by prior arrangement, donated them to the town at a public ceremony in 1926.
