The historic day was Tuesday, June 18, 1946, at 4.15pm near the Margao municipal garden square. Today, it is known as Lohia Maidan. 18th June when the main action and revolution took place in Margao.
The 18th June movement was basically a struggle for civil liberties. It was a struggle to gain back the lost civil liberties vis-a-vis the Salazarist regime. Lohia had shown exemplary courage in challenging the very might of Salazar on June 18. It was not all about Lohia. There were other leaders from Goa—Purshottam Kakodkar, Nilkant (Nikubab) Karapurkar, Vinayak Mayekar, Vishwanath Lawande, Vasant Molio, Laxmikant Bhembre, Evagrio Jorge, Shyamrao Madkaikar, Jaiwant Manjrekar, Bala Kakodkar, Pachibab Sardesai, John Carvalho, Dionisio Ribeiro, Jose Inacio Loyola, Jose Francisco Martins, Vasant Kare, Guilherme D'Souza Ticlo and several others.
The 18th June movement lit the torch of freedom. It told the Salazarist regime that eventually Goa would be free. The movement to liberate Goa was an outcome of the June 18 movement and liberalization came on December 19, 1961.
