The rest area is named for Walt Whitman who is best known as a poet and the author of Leaves of Grass published in 1855. Throughout his life he worked as a journalist, teacher and clerk who championed temperance, religious freedom and peace over war. After his health declined he spent the remainder of his life in Camden NJ passing away in 1892.
