T. Claude Ryan and William H. Bowlus founded San Diego - Los Angeles Airlines, the first all-year airplane passenger service in the United States. It began operation on March 1, 1925 ferrying passengers on a regular schedule between San Diego, California and Los Angeles, California.

Ryan also formed a flying school and Ryan Airlines. It is this latter company that built Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis, although Ryan had already sold his half interest in the company before then and was not present when Lindbergh arrived or during the plane's construction.

He formed the Ryan Aeronautical Corporation in 1927 to sell Siemens & Halske radial engines. Siemens & Halske bought him out in 1928 after he failed to start manufacturing the engines at his factory. Ryan formed another Ryan Aeronautical Corporation in 1932 to manufacture the Ryan ST and other US Army Air Corps training planes. During the '50s and '60s, the company built the XV-5 Vertifan, VZ-3 Vertiplane, YO-51 Dragonfly, and the Doppler radar system on the Apollo Lunar Lander.

In 1968, he sold his entire interest to Teledyne. Teledyne-Ryan manufactured pilotless drones and airframes for the Bell Huey helicopter. Teledyne later sold Teledyne-Ryan to Northrop Grumman in 1999.

All of the former Teledyne-Ryan buildings were demolished in 2011 for parking lot space.
