Hotel consists of two towers.

The western tower was the first wing of the Sheraton San Diego complex to open, in 1970 as the Sheraton Inn-San Diego Airport. It was renamed the Sheraton Harbor Island West in 1984, then the Sheraton Grand on Harbor Island in 1987. In 1994 it was merged into the adjacent Sheraton Harbor Island Hotel as an additional wing. In 1999, the tower was briefly separated again into its own hotel, operating as The Westin Harbor Island for two years. In 2001 the tower was merged into the Sheraton again as the West Tower. It is now known as the Bay Tower.

The eastern tower opened in 1972 as the Sheraton-Harbor Island Hotel. It was renamed the Sheraton Harbor Island East in 1984, then again the Sheraton Harbor Island Hotel in 1988, then the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina in 1998.
