Joel Gold Mine

South Africa / Free State / Theunissen /
 mine, gold mine

Joel mine is owned and managed by Harmony Gold and is located in the Free State, on the south-western edge of the Witwatersrand Basin comprimising two shafts. Previously, ore mined at Joel was transported to Central Plant, 38km away for processing but since the recommissioning of the Joel Plant in November 2009, this is now processed on site.

Scattered mining takes place on the Beatrix Reef, down to a depth of some 1 400m. Upgrading of the infrastructure at North Shaft is currently in progress. Harmony acquired Joel from AngloGold Ashanti Limited as part of the Freegold transaction in January 2002.

In FY10, Joel employed 1 470 people – 1 436 employees and 34 contractors.
