Remant of medieval hunting forest, now owned by MoD and used for training and as a firing range, although intemittant access is alloed to recreational users. Heathland is important habitat for amphibians. It is the only location in the UK where all 12 species of native amphibians and reptiles can be found in one place. Especially important are the Natterjack Toads as well as the facinatingly named Leopard Slugs of Cranmer Bottom.
