In 1783, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania established a 3000-acre tract of land north of where the Allegheny River merged with the Ohio River. An initial town plan for Allegheny City featuring 36 city blocks surrounded by a common grazing area was developed the following year. Because Allegheny City was intended by the Pennsylvania Legislature to serve as the county seat of Allegheny County, the central blocks were designed for public uses, including a market house and post office. The main thoroughfare was East Ohio Street.

Comments

  • A vast, empty, bleak, untraversible office development girded by a mindnumbing one-way traffic system. Successfully gutted old Allegheny City as a viable community and effectively bars the northside of Pittsburgh from convenient access to the north shore and downtown. A civilized society would raze it, or at least get rid of the dumb one-way maze.
  • Like so much of Pittsburgh, Allegheny Center (as well as the entire North Side) has fallen victim to the ineffectual political situation under which Pittsburgh has suffered for an entire generation. Solutions to these problems exist, but the namby-pamby nitwits and clowns that hold public office will NEVER rock the boat to as much as suggest solutions, lest they fall out of favor with the inbred, nepotistic, entrenched, old-money cretins who pull the strings. Good Luck.
  • Allegheny Common really could be nicer, but it is indeed neglected by public officials. That is about to change in 2009 when the large "Rivers Casino" open rougly one mile away near the Carnegie Science Center. Gotta love those casino's for getting the attention of politicos.
