Now the site of a modern housing estate, the mental hospital opened in 1851 as Colney Hatch Asylum, it was the second County Asylum for Middlesex. By 1858 it housed 1293 lunatics. Between 1851 and 1873, 2969 inmates were buried in its cemetery. Where did all of the graves go? New Southgate station was built as the asylum's station, bringing in new supplies of fresh lunatics etc. Patients who were incarcerated there were known as 'Colney Hatch cases'.
