The Plytenberg is a artificially built small hill at the edge of Leer in East-Frisia near the Ems (ab. 9 m high – diameter 64 m). It possibly had a function in the 15th century as a post of the fortress of Leerort. Earlier statements, that the Plytenberg was a grave of a Viking captain, or a sea sign are proven to be wrong on the basis of archaeological research. According to an old folk story a giant had lost a sack filled with earth at this place. According to a more recent fairy tale story by Albrecht Janssen the small hill has kobold inhabitants ("Erdmantjes").
