Domus Augustana (Rome)

Italy / Lazio / Rome
palace, ruins, Roman Empire, 1st century construction

Ruins of the luxurious palaces built by successors of Augustus. Latter added a decorative grandeur to it. It had an adjacent statdium purpose of which is debatable.

Its name is not directly related to the emperor Augustus (r. 27 BC – AD 14) and should not be confused with the nearby Domus Augusti, but probably refers to the later Roman meaning of Augustus as "emperor".

  • This was the emperor's private residence. It was the work of Rabirio the architect and developed around a peristyle which had a basin in the middle. To the north was a second peristyle. The emperor's rooms were to the south. A small bridge connected the imperial palace with a small temple erected on the little island.
