Shishupala Gada:
This was the ancient capital of Kalinga along the bank of river Daya. This place was the witness to the famous "Kalinga War" had taken place in 2nd Century BC, i.e around 2200 years back.In the Dhauli rock edict of Emperor Ashok, it is mentioned that more than 100,000 (hundred thousand) people were killed in this war and more than 150,000 were wounded and taken as prisoners. The ferocity with which the Kalingan people fought and laid down their lives for the freedom of their nation overwhelmed Emperor Ashok and he renounced war for ever and actively engaged himself in the spread of Buddhism. In a way, this event changed the course of world history and helped Buddhism spread far and wide. shisupal the place of happenings, the youth's of this place are called kharvela kumars. various monuments are there specially the sohal khamb(16 pillars where the king kept their elephants) describing the dareness of the of this people.

    the name of the site is sisupalgarh. and it is still a question of serious research the site was existed or not during the time of Kalinga war. it is not a scholarly comment to say that sisupalgarh withnessed the kalinga war. And the second important thing is that the responsible sides should take care of illegial construction inside the site. Actually, those people who are proud of orisa past should take care of such problem in archaeological sites in orissa

    To the archaeological survey of Odisha, I am a German archaeologist and I have visited the grand monument of Shishupalgarh about five times some years ago. Now modern buildings have been set up within one of the most important Indian archaeological monument. This is an absolute disgrace! The archaeological survey of Oshisha should be ashamed of giving permission to the partly distruction of Karavelas fort! Nowhere in India such a distruction of such a famous and still originally well preserved monument has taken place!! What does the government of Odisha do again this bararious situation?
