Tiritiri Matangi Island is a native bird sanctuary that is home to several endangered species. Visitors are rewarded with the special experience of seeing some of New Zealand's most interesting birds in the wild - often close up. A ferry service runs to the island. Pack a picnic lunch and take a day trip to walk the island's tracks and listen to the birds.
To the greatest extent possible, all non-native flora and fauna are being eradicated from this island, to provide a safe place for some of the endangered native species to live. Among the birds which are almost impossible to find elsewhere are Saddlebacks and Kokakos.
Access is by ferry from Auckland and Gulf Harbour, but only 150 visitors are allowed per day.
