The Hauraki Gulf lies between the Auckland Region, the Coromandel Peninsula, and the Hauraki Plains.
It covers some 4,000 square kilometres. Each of the islands in the Hauraki Gulf has its own distinctive character. Some are no bigger than a haystack, while others would constitute a whole country elsewhere in the world. The most prominent is Rangitoto Island, the distinctive volcanic cone clearly visible from the central city and the North Shore. There are many other islands, most around 30 minutes' ferry ride from downtown Auckland and perfect for day trips or longer adventures.

The gulf is also the destination for fishing, sailing, dolphin and whale watching, cruising, kayaking and windsurfing.

Hauraki is Māori for North Wind.
