Grey imported many exotic plants and animals to the island, and wallabies and peacocks still remain. From Mansion House Bay, walking tracks lead through the regenerating native forest to beaches, Maori pa sites and old copper mines. The island can be reached by ferry from Sandspit, just one hour north of Auckland.
Kawau Island is lies in the Hauraki Gulf, close to the north-eastern coast of the North Island of New Zealand. It lies 2 km off the coast of the North Auckland peninsula, and shelters Kawau Bay to the north-east of Warkworth. It is 50 km north of Auckland.
