The island is an extinct volcanic cone, which erupted between 1 million and 3 million years ago.
It is deeply dissected by ravines radiating from the 722 metre peak. It is one of New Zealand's most important wildlife sanctuaries and access is heavily restricted.
It was named "Little Barrier Island by Captain Cook in 1769. The Maori name Hauturu means "resting place of the winds".
