Designed originally by Matvei Kazakov, it was constructed between 1782 and 1793 for the Moscow University. After the 1812 fire in which the university library and archives perished, it required extensive rebuilding by Domeniko Gilardi (1757-1819) with multiple modifications.

The second home of Moscow University whose original home was on the site of the current State History Museum. That building burned, and later Catherine the Great presented the university with this land along Mokhovaya Street for the construction of a new main building.
