Main offices, rehearsal spaces, and production shops of the Pittsburgh Opera. The building is notable as the former plant and headquarters of the Westinghouse Air Brake Company, formed in 1869 to manufacture George Westinghouse's brake system that revolutionized rail transportation. While this is certainly the original site of Westinghouse's company, the building may be an expanded or rebuilt version of the original plant, which, according to an old Pittsburgh Press article (June 23, 1934, page 41) consisted of two much smaller structures sized 50ft x 60ft and 30ft x 120ft.
