military, shipwreck, American Revolutionary War 1775-1783, historical layer / disappeared object
Rough approximation of the remains of at least 10 British transports lost during the Siege of Yorktown either by allied gunfire or scuttling.
Archaeologists found nine wrecks that could be linked to the 1781 British fleet and excavated one — the Betsy — in a 1987 expedition that was documented the following year by National Geographic magazine.
A tenth is currently under investigation by marine archaeologists after a new breakwater project shifted bottom currents and exposed the wreck in 2010.
