The widening of Via de’Longobardi led to the discovery of a large multistoried building inhabited from the I and IV centuries AD and with a good view of the Lago di Chiusi. It was identified as an aristocratic Roman residence - the largest discovered so far in Chiusi - with areas of mosaic flooring and illustrated plaster walls. Excavations encompass around 500m2 of ancient buildings, a mere tenth of the total extent of the domus buried beneath the vegetable gardens and estimated at around 7,000m2. A tour of the excavations has recently been inaugurated, however, it is only available at certain times of the year.
