  • Gyömrő is 27 km from Budapest and it is one of the most dynamically developing suburban towns of the region. As a result of its special geographical features Gyömrő plays a main role in administration, cultural events, education and health care. Our town has many natural and cultural assets. In an almost unique manner in Hungary The Lake Bath is just in the middle of the town. There used to be a steam brick-yard on its site. Water flooded the brick-yard and it led to the closure of the factory. This way a lake came into being, where not only the citizens of Gyömrő may relax and enjoy themselves. Its first golden age was in the middle of the 1920s when its environment was formed and built. Its natural water was suitable for the healing of rheumatic diseases. During its history the lake suffered several damages but thanks to the renovation between 2004 and 2007 it began to flourish again. The whole environment has been renewed by imitating the old times with the modern technology of the 21st century. The most spectacular new motive is the floating-bar which stands on piles in the middle of the lake at the end of a 30 m long landing-stage. The unique Round Bar waits its guests in the picturesque environment everyday from 10 in the morning to 2 o’clock at night. A path leads the arrivals from the upper entrance to the end of the beach section. At night the illumination makes the whole shore suitable for an evening walk. Eight snack bars and two restaurants offer a wide selection of meals and drinks. In summer the temperature of the water can reach 26-30 oC, mainly where the lake is shallow. In winter skating is possible, too. The forests surrounding the town are perfect places for hiking. The Stone Bridge, which remained from Roman Times, on the outskirt, is a great target of excursions. Besides the natural sights, several cultural sights can be found in Gyömrő. For example the Teleki Castle. To be honest for the first encounter the guests should arrive by a cart, a coach or on foot instead. No matter from which direction we approach the castle the characteristic form of the building can be seen from 20-25 km far and by getting closer we may experience the harmonic unity of the built and the natural billowy environment with the hills around the castle. And when we are in front of the building the calmness of the classical geometric symmetry charms us in spite of its strictness prompting the serenity of timelessness and immortality. At the beginning of the 1770s the Teleki family acquired land in Gyömrő. At the same time their castle was built. Unfortunately this palace burnt down in 1835. Sámuel Teleki, the famous Africa researcher asked József Hild, the celebrated architect of the age (Cathedral of Budapest and Esztergom etc.), to design the new palace on the foundations of the burnt palace. In the summers on the National Rákóczi Days open-air classical concerts take place in the magnificent environment. Show-jumping is an often returning spectacle of the event. Next to the Teleki Castle there is the Calvinist Church, in which a unique relief in Hungary is kept. The marble relief made by Antonio Canova was put up to the memory of a tragic triple casualty. This pearl of the town is one of the most beautiful masterpieces of classicism. The church keeps many other devotional objects of the Teleki family. A memorial column on the outskirt of the town, was put up to commemorate II. Ferenc Rákóczi, who gave a decisive recruiting speech to his soldiers on Mánya field on 3rd July 1705 at the time of the Rákóczi War of Independence. Each year the town remembers the important historical event by large-scale programmes. Show-jumping, classical concerts in the park of the Teleki Castle, recitals in the chapel, handicrafts market and battle-scene are organized this time. The Roman Catholic Chapel St. John of Nepomuk is one of the town’s most valuable assets. The baroque chapel was built by the Europe-wide famous Jakab Fellner. Because of its excellent acoustics it is a very good concert hall in spite of its small dimensions. In Gyömrő there are many pieces of the built cultural heritage: buildings, statues and works of art. Many artists lived here or work here nowadays as well. As a result of the development of the last few years Gyömrő became a pleasant suburban town meeting the requirement of the 21st century. In 2001 Gyömrő won the ’town’ status. Since then the improvement is unbroken. The little town with a population of 15 000 satisfies all demands of its citizens and also its visitors. Don’t hesitate to choose the naturally beautiful Gyömrő as a place to go to relax. It takes only a quarter of an hour to get to Gyömrő from the capital city of Hungary (Budapest).
