In 1927 the young amateur photographer Ansel Adams crawled out onto this ledge with a half-plate (12cm x 16cm) field camera and, experimenting with a red lens filter, took a picture of Half Dome. The Sierra Club published that picture with the title "Monolith."
For many years the Park Service maintained a trail from the Vernal Falls bridge to the Diving Board vía Grizzly Peak and it was a popular day hike. By the end of the 1950s that trail had been closed and it was never rebuilt.
