Golabganj Upazila (Sylhet district) with an area of 278.34 sq km is bounded by Jaintiapur and Kanaighat upazilas on the north, Fenchuganj and Barlekha upazilas on the south, Beanibazar and Barlekha upazilas on the east, Sylhet sadar upazila on the west. Main rivers are Surma, Kushiyara, Sonai.
Golabganj town is located at 24.8464618N 92.0181829E. Golabganj (Town) consists of 4 mouzas. It has an area of 11.55 sq km. The town has a population of 14835; male 52.44%, female 47.56%; density of population is 1284 per sq km. Literacy rate among the town people is 40.6%.
Golabganj thana, now an upazila, was established in 1922. The upazila consists of 11 union parishads, 108 mouzas and 254 villages.
Historical events As a part of the historic Nankar Movement Ronikeli rebellion and Vadeswar rebellion were held in the upazila.

As of 1991 Bangladesh census, Population 229074; male 50.29%, female 49.71%; Muslim 95.15%, Hindu 4.82%; Buddhist, Christian and others 0.03%; major ethnic nationals: Manipuri and Tripura.
Literacy and educational institutions Average literacy 38.7%; male 44.2%, female 33.2%. Educational institutions: college 3, collegiate school 4, secondary school 25, primary school (government) 140, madrasa 32. Fulbaria Madrasa (1882) and MC Academy (1934) are notable educational institutions.
Main occupations Agriculture 24.07%, agricultural labourer 18.54%, wage labourer 8.52%, construction labourer 1.79%, transport 3.05%, commerce 11.03%, service 6.19%, others 17.55%.
