The State Silk Museum was found in 1887 as a part of Caucasian Sericulture Station.
The museum is sited in the specially built (1892) building which survives in an authentic shape. It is one of the finest works of Tbilisian architecture of the late 19th century and is listed as a monument of national significance. The original building, part of which was intended for a museum, as well as the original library furniture, display cases and sericultural equipment still survive intact and hear witness to the integrity and its purpose-built design as it was then perceived.
Permanent exhibition endeavor to display the entire silk manufacturing process and its history. N. Shavrov, founder of the museum and library, collected many exhibits himself, in the main they were donated by individuals or sericultural institutions from Europe.
The museum library owns large variety of books. Published in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries in twenty languages, the titles kept in the library deal with a variety of subjects, including sericulture, cloth manufacturing and procession, dyes and dying, natural sciences and economy.
