Housed in a breezy bungalow, this latest Indonesian export hails from Batam Island. A family owned joint, the restaurant has made a name for itself on Batam for serving delicious Nasi Padang food. It’s also known as Istana Ayam Pop for their speciality Ayam Pop – free range chicken which is first steamed before being deep fried. Unlike other restaurants in Kuala Lumpur which serve it with the sweet and spicy black soy sauce, the version here is served with a bright red chili sauce. Slightly sweetish but spicy, the sauce adds flavour to the juicy chicken.
An array of dishes is available to tempt one taste buds for lunch and dinner. Select the items that are served in individual plates, just like how they do it in Indonesia. Choose from two types of Dendeng served with red chili sambal – one which is deep fried while the other version is pounded. The deep fried version is crunchy while the pounded version is fork tender. Another Padang favourite is Bergedel, a minced potato and meat cutlet. Puti Bungsu Batam’s version is larger than usual with an average taste. Compared to other Nasi Padang restaurants in town, the prices here are reasonable. Although parking around the area can be a problem, it is within walking distance from the nearby offices along Jalan Yap Kwan Seng.
