This is something very, very strange. You can only see it at night, and even then, only just barely. You cannot see it from the ocean, as it's too dim. If you're on the road, you can only see it by looking at it from the corner of your eye. It's a light. Very pale, very soft, very dim, but still a light. It's high up on a sheer cliff-face, so it's not one of the old bunkers. There's no path, no way up there, no ladder.
I tried to get a closer look with binoculars, but I would only make out the flickering illumination and nothing more. It's NOT visible from the North Shore side, you have to go out to just before the gate, turn around and start heading back.
Don't look directly at it, you'll lose it. Wear a hat with a wide brim to block out the glare from Haleiwa. You'll see it best on a clear night with no moon, but that's a dangerous time to be out there.
Make offerings before you head out, and before you leave.
What is it? I do not know. Kaena Point is the Leina a Ka `Uhane, or Spirit Leap. It might have been a spirit, resting on the cliff, building the courage to make the leap to the afterlife. Or it could be an observation port to a concealed bunker for the tracking station that some careless person left partially open.
In Hawai'i, anything is possible.
