The original site of European (French) settlement of the South shore. Strategically placed, French families moved to this exact area in 1749. The bend in the river at this point made it impossible for the Fort at Detroit to see who or what was coming up river. This habitation was set up as a village and signal station. The area is also called Ojibway for the unsuccessful company town that was started and never finished in the 1910s. The area is abandoned, used as a dumping ground and by off-roaders and their 4 wheelers. Wildlife is still fairly abundant in this area, and is the only stretch of natural Detroit River beach in the entire area.

Comments

  • It was named La côte de misère after a while because the soil is sandy, and becomes infertile after so many tills.
