The Irvine Company salt works was established at head of Newport Back Bay in 1934. It was formerly located to the east of the dike to the north-northwest of the intersection of Jamboree and Eastbluff. The property was leased to Western Salt Company in 1950 and was later closed due to being damaged beyond repair by the floods of 1968 and 1969. Although the Irvine Company demolished all of the buildings in 1969, this salt dike is the only remnant of the old salt works.

Motorized boats are not allowed past the Newport Aquatic Center, unless it is the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) or have received special permission from DFG. Canoes and kayaks can go in the Upper Back Bay up to the salt dike, but all side channels are closed to all boats to protect sensitive species and habitat.
