Our Lady of the Rocks

 island, interesting place

Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Škrpjela/Госпа од шкрпјела) is one of the two artificial islets off the coast of Perast in the Bay of Kotor, Montenegro. The Church of Our Lady of the Rocks on the islet is an important tourist attraction in this area.

The church (14-17 AD) contains a famous icon of the Holy Virgin (several seamen were saved from storm on a reef here, and found the icon; then, people started sinking old ships here, and pile rocks, so that an artificial island was created, and a chhurch built thereupon). People used to bring in silver images as gifts, which are now displayed in the prayer hall. By tradition, every year on 22 November people from all over Boca come here on ornately decorated boats, bringing new stones for the island.
There is a small museum inside, and in a separate house there's a shop offering souvenires, snacks and soft drinks (alcohol is not allowed on the island).

Bathing is prohibited.
