This lawn dates from about 1953 and replaces the elaborate formal flower gardens laid out by Princess Alexandra. This was largely a cost-cutting exercise but also a move to a more informal way of life in the post-war world. In 1939 there were 58 gardeners at Sandringham, by 1980 there only 12. Prior to the creation of the flower gardens this was the site of the first lake or pond.
