United Collieries Pty. Limited (United) was formed in 1980 and operates an underground coal mine approximately 16 kilometres west of Singleton and 80 kilometres west of Newcastle in the Upper Hunter Valley of New South Wales. As of December 1999 United’s ownership comprises 95% Xstrata Coal Pty. Ltd. and 5% Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU).

United Collieries utilises continuous miners to form up development workings and a 200m wide longwall face for the secondary extraction of each longwall block. The mining operation at United extracts the Woodlands Hill seam (local nomenclature) known to the Department of Primary Industries as the Arrowfield Seam. Coal can be processed on site to produce both semi-soft coking and thermal coal products.
