On the Road to Kodaikanal (SH-156 Kodai Ghat Road, or Law's Ghat Road), which had regular Bus service, Perumal Malai town developed as a trans-shipment point for produce from the upper Palar River Valley. At an altitude of 1580m, this area produced especially tropical fruits, Oranges, Jackfruit and from the lower nearby valleys, Bannana. The town derives it's name from the landmark Perumal Malai (Perumal mountain) (2234m) just north of the town.
