Initially, the Vaivara railway station had two low platforms, 350 m and 400 m long. In 2014, a new short, 35-metre platform between the tracks was opened instead, which means that trains can only enter and exit through zone C. The railway station was built in 1870. The arrival of the railway brought significant changes to the economic and cultural life of Vaivara. In the summer, a massive influx of holidaymakers from St. Petersburg began to arrive, and the population of the village grew. On the western side of the station, there are remains of the Sillamäe–Vaivara–Viivikonna viaduct, built in 1960 and closed in 1985 due to a collision with a railway crane passing under the viaduct. Currently, two important industrial railway lines depart from Vaivara station: the northern one leads to Sillamäe, the southern one to the Eesti Thermal Power Plant, Viivikonda and other industrial areas in Ida-Virumaa County, which are mainly used for transporting oil shale and oil shale products.
