In 1972, Nucor's fifth steel joist plant went into operation in St. Joe, Indiana. By this time, Nucor had launched an advertising campaign to promote the high quality, reliable and low-cost joists streaming out of the Vulcraft facilities. Nucor advertised how Vulcraft had its own trucks and the ability to deliver, engineers who were willing to come to a job site on a moment's notice, and how the number of Vulcraft locations were expanding.

The St. Joe plant is also one of Nucor's six Vulcrafts that produce steel deck. Other plants that produce steel deck are located in South Carolina, Nebraska, Alabama, Texas and New York. Current annual capacity of the six plants in the production of steel deck is approximately 430,000 tons.
