When the MCR/CASO first reached Essex County, the original terminus of the Canadian line was Amherstburg. Trains would pass thru a tunnel under Front Road where two docks were available. The rail cars would be loaded onto ferries and shuttled to Stoney Island, where the right-of-way is still visible today. The trains would proceed across the island to a bridge crossing the Detroit River to Grosse Isle, and another bridge that connected to the main land of America. Grosse Isle housed a station, which still survies, a roundhouse and other structures to make locomotive servicing possible.

Eventually, the MCR chose Windsor, Ontario as a more suitable crossing point to connect to Detroit, building the Essex Cut-Off from Essex to Windsor in 1884, using ferries and later, construing a tunnel in 1910.
