'Basia' village of Tangabo union is located 21 km south east of Gafargaon town on the west bank of old Brahmaputra river. 'Toke' Bazar (Kapashia Upazila) lies few km south of it across the Banar/Lakkhya river and Mirzapur Bazar (Pakundia upazila) on the east across the old Brahmaputra river.
The place name Basia may be found in the earliest scientific map of Bengal and Bihar of 1776 AD prepared by the famous British cartographer Major James Rennell as "Byshya". The map was printed and published as 'Bengal-Bihar Atlas' in 1776 AD by Rennell-Dury wall map from London.(www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/BaharBengal-dury-1776... and (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Rennell). In the map place name 'Basia' has been written as 'Byshya'- as still spoken by the local people. The place was of strategic importance during British period. The area suffered during earthquake of 1897 and 1919.
Basia's geographical coordinates are 24.3214452N and 90.6135771E and connected with Upazila HQ Gafargaon and Kapasia by double lane metal road (Upazila road). It is now under the newly created Pagla Police station 4 miles to its west.
Basia has a High School for male and female students upto class X11, a Primary school, several Madrasahs and 3 Bazaars. Chand Khan (late) and Alhaj Abdur Rahman (late) were noted figures of the village and are remembered for their philanthropic works in education and social welfare during 1940's to 1970s.
Other noted persons of Basia are: Murshed Uddin Ahmed ex-controller Tech Edu, Brig.Gen (Retd) Khurshed Uddin Ahmed, Engr. Ershad Uddin Ahmed Addl Chief engineer (retd) PWD, Col (Retd) Emdad Uddin Ahmed. Dr. Amjad Uddin Ahmed Ph.D. Firoza Khatun Ruby M.A. Rear Admiral (Retd) Bazlur Rahman, Anisur Rahman (Bhulu), late Momtaz Uddin Ahmed, Dr. Ahsanullah MBBS, FCPS, former D.G. Health Service, Dean and Principal Dhaka Medical college and Mahtab Ahmed of 'Darogabari' . Brig.Gen (Rtd) Khurshid Ahmed, a freedom fighter, died on 22 April 2013 and accorded a State funeral by the Govt. for his role as freedom fighter and in the 1952 Language movement. Apart from it, Mr. Abdul Ali, ex-Director, T&T worked for dev of a female primary school in Bamunkhali. Mr. Ishtiaque (Hazrat) Ali (late), Dr. Md Ismail (late), Md. Yunus BA.BT, (late), Md Israel M.Sc (late), Dr Motaher Hossain (Manik) are noted sons of Basia-Bamunkhali village. The village boasts for its 3 shaheed FF in the Independence war of Bangladesh.
