The building was constructed for Physics Institute at the Moscow Imperial University. It was opened in 1903. (architect was K.M. Bykovsky, 1898-1901). The faculty of the Physics Department was located here prior to 1953 and the move of the Moscow State University to the Lenin (Sparrow) Hills campus.
