Mill Bay Ferry terminal is also the oldest car-ferry terminal in the system (tied with Brentwood Bay), being 86 years old as of 2010. The ferry that serves the route, the MV Mill Bay, is going to be retired sometime in the years of 2011 and 2012, and the ferry will either be replaced by a ferry almost double it's size, the MV Klitsa, or the route will be shut down, since it's not technically a necessity.
It [the terminal] was also used as a filming location in the classic 1970 film Five Easy Pieces written by Carole Eastman (as Adrien Joyce) and Bob Rafelson, and directed by Rafelson. The film stars Jack Nicholson, Karen Black, and Susan Anspach. The cast also includes Billy Green Bush, Fannie Flagg, Ralph Waite, Sally Struthers, Lois Smith, and Toni Basil. The film tells the story of a surly oil rig worker, Bobby Dupea, whose blue-collar existence belies his youth as a child prodigy. When word reaches Bobby that his father is dying, he reluctantly takes his girlfriend, Rayette (Black), a dimwitted, pregnant waitress, back home to make peace with his family. Nicholson's character and performance present a powerful picture of a troubled man, born to privilege and culture.
The terminal was most prominently used when Bobby (Nicholson) was begging Catherine (Anspach) to talk whilst holding up traffic in both directions.
