  • Kalrayan Hills- It is one part of the Eastern ghats, lies on the western side of the Kallakurichi Taluk. This area spread over an area of 600 sq. kms. approximately with the height ranging from 1000 ft to 3800 ft from the sea level. The History of Kalrayan hills with its Jagirdars run back to the time of Krishna Deverayar the Emperor of 'Vijaya Nagar Kingdom'. The emperor Krishna Deverayar given the rights to the tribes to enjoy this land but imposed many taxes on them. About the hill tribes it is said that warriors belonging to 'KARALAR' community had come from Kanchipuram and settled in kalrayan hills. after sometimes they over ride the tribal people called 'Vedar' (hunter) and married their wives. The communities of karalar and vedar who at present are called 'Malayali' and they call themselves as 'Goundars'. Kalrayan hills Possesses innumerable tourism Potentialities like water falls, jungle streams, rivers and rivulets and lovely jungle walks. The place is a veritable paradise for trekkers. It is also called as 'Poor man's hill station' of Tamil Nadu. Every year the District Administration is conducting the Summer Festival to create the awareness among the tribes.

And forms as one block in the Tamil Nadu Hills. The Kallvarayan Hills run through Arthur taluk in Salem District, Chengam taluk in Thiruvanamalai District and Sangarapuram Taluk in Villupuram District There are a number of streams and rivulets flowing in the Kallvarayan Hills. The Malayalis (lit. mountain people) are the Principal inhabitants of the Kalvarayan Hills. The Malayalis refer to themselves as ‘Goundars’ and claim themselves as the descendant of the ‘Vellalar’ caste of cultures. The Kalvarayan Hills are estimated to have existed in isolation for approximately 400 years. Till then it was under the control of the local rulers namely Jagirdars. Only during 1976, the area was taken over by the Government. This was done through ‘the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) and Tamil Nadu Inam Estate Abolition and Ryotwari Act’ under which the Jagirdars were deprived of power and the Malayalis were released from the Bonded Labour system. Since then the Government and some voluntary organizations have been engaging in various developmental works in that area. The tribal community of Kallvarayan hills speaks a language in Tamil. They were organized into various exogamous groups called vakuppar or atappu or kilai. Each atappu is composed of various smaller patrilineal exogamous groups called vitu. Each vitu consists of several families. Normally Monogamy is in practice among the Malayalis.Agriculture is the Main occupation in the Kalvaryan Hills. Millet varieties (ragi, varadu, samai, tinai, cholam, cumbu) are being cultivated and in some places paddy, pulses, chillies, red gram, groundnut, tobacco, mustard, and varieties of beans are also grown as secondary cultivation, but it is not regular basis as well as 80% of tribal community belongs to daily wages depends on agriculture with in the same hills and moving to other district for their family income. The subsistence economy also includes fishing and occasional hunting of rabbits, deer etc. Through this occupation they are unable to meet their daily bread as not having regular income. There is no facilities for health care & support for the entire community of Tribal people in Kallvarayan Hills.
