A high-grade deposit first worked by a Mr. James Fenimore Cooper (not the author). He used a hand mortar to work the first ore until he saved enough to purchase a two-stamp mill in 1897 and later a four-stamp mill. Cooper sold the mine to J.R. Dover and his son, who were developing the Mountain Boy, in 1899. The Cooper and Mountain Boy were purchased in 1903 by Gold Crown Mining Company stockholders, but by that time both were played out.
